Obituary for Robert Edward Mattis

Robert Edward Mattis, age 76, of Harborcreek, passed away peacefully, at his home, on Friday, October 26, 2018. He was born in Erie on August 31, 1942, son of the late Edward and Ann (Luchin) Mattis.
Bob was a proud graduate of Milton Hershey School, Class of 1960, where he specialized in sheet metal fabrication. He loved returning yearly to Hershey to attend homecoming and to reunite with classmates and dear alumni friends who affectionately called him “Milt”.
Bob was employed by the General Electric Co. retiring in 2002 after more than 30 years of service. He was a racer and owner of stock cars at local tracks in the 1960’s and a member of a car club called “RAKERS”. Bob loved NASCAR racing and was an avid collector of racing memorabilia. He also enjoyed fabricating and building race car bodies for his friends. He was a long-standing Cleveland Indians and Browns fan and enjoyed hosting family and friends during summer months at Dohler’s Cottages.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 23 years, Sue (Fuller) Mattis; one daughter, Betty Ann Mattis Johnson and her husband, Ted of Waterford; three sons: William “Bill” Mattis of Erie, Robert “Bob” Mattis and his wife, Brenda of North East and Matthew “Matt” Fuller and his wife, Melissa of Greene Twp.; one sister, Judy Walker of Erie; one brother, Richard “Rich” Mattis and his wife, Kristin “Kris” of Palmyra, PA; seven grandchildren: Eric Johnson (Megan Kurytnak), Tim Johnson, Michael Johnson, Sara Mattis, Breanna Morse, Joshua Fuller and Jacob Fuller and three great-grandchildren: Kaylin Mattis-Folmar, Riley Donahue and Eli Johnson. Bob is further survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws, including the blended Fuller, Luchin, Tombaugh and Turos families; his best buddy, Tony Lyngarkos; his “other” son, Jim Moore and dear friend, Walt Wieczorek.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra (Turos) Mattis in 1992; his brothers-in-law: Ronald Walker, John Fuller and Robert Tombaugh as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and lifelong friend, John Harvey.
Bob’s family wishes to extend a very special “thank you” to the Great Lakes Hospice team who lovingly cared for him during his recent illness; especially Denny Seth and Kayla Chapman.
Family and friends may call at the Dusckas-Taylor Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 5151 Buffalo Rd. (at Hannon Rd. in Harborcreek Twp.), on Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at South Harborcreek United Methodist Church, 7929 McGill Rd.
